Last year I suggested some awesome kids books  for Halloween. This year I thought we should try some spooky movies to set the Halloween mood; and what better day for it than Friday the 13th? (Though that movie did not make the list :O )

I polled people on Halloween choices and went digging through our collection, and here they are, the best movies for the Halloween season.

Movies that will make you sleep with the lights on

Best place to start on Halloween is where it is scariest. With that in mind, here are some horror movies that remind you of the things that go bump in the night.

Halloween

What better place to start than the eponymous Halloween movie. Scares set at just the right time of year. Nothing will create the scary vibe faster than this horrific choice.

On a cold Halloween night in 1963, six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister, Judith. He was sentenced and locked away for 15 years. But on October 30, 1978, while being transferred for a court date, a 21-year-old Michael Myers steals a car and escapes Smith’s Grove. He returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for his next victims.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

The original is the movie that gets the best reviews, and I am happy to say that we have this movie that won’t give you nightmares… you’ll be too afraid to sleep.

Nancy and her friends suffer violent nightmares which all feature one common element, a disfigured serial killer with a glove made of razors on his right hand. When one of the group is murdered while asleep, Nancy realizes that she must stay awake and try to uncover the truth behind this phantasmic killer Freddy Krueger.

Movies that will make you roll over in your grave with laugher

Having had our thrills and chills, let’s move on to a bit of comedy and romance, with zombies of course.

Zombieland

zombieland

Personally this is my favorite on the list, nothing like the collapse of civilization to a zombie plague to set the mood!

After a virus turns most people into zombies, the world’s surviving humans remain locked in an ongoing battle against the hungry undead. Four survivors  abide by a list of survival rules and zombie-killing strategies as they make their way toward a rumored safe haven in Los Angeles.

Warm Bodieswarm

It’s the zombies who get romantic in this unique take on familiar horror tropes that make up the bread and butter of Halloween movies.

A terrible plague has left the planet’s population divided between zombies and humans. An unusual zombie named R sees his walking-dead brethren attacking a living woman named Julie and rescues her. Julie sees that R is different from the other zombies, and the pair embark on an unusual relationship. As their bond grows and R becomes more and more human, a chain of events unfolds that could transform the entire lifeless world.

Family Friendly Spooks and Scares

Coraline

The creepiest of the family friendly lot, I offer a warning that this one, though animated, scares many adults.

An adventurous girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets and it doesn’t want to let her go…

Halloweentown

halloweentownNext Disney gets into the Halloween game with a movie that is so charming and iconic it has become a tradition for many families.

In this chiller, a young woman discovers that she, like her ancestors, is a witch. Using her newfound powers, she takes on the evil being that has been tormenting her family and Halloween Town for ages.

Goosebumps

goosebumps-logo.jpegA Halloween list isn’t complete without an ode to the famous spooky Goosebumps series. Out in 2015, Jack Black stars in this family friendly spook-fest.

Upset about moving from the big city to a small town, young Zach Cooper finds a silver lining when he meets his beautiful neighbor Hannah. The teen is surprised to learn that Hannah’s mysterious father is R.L. Stine, the famous author of the best-selling “Goosebumps” series. When Zach accidentally unleashes the monsters from the fantastic tales, it’s up to Stine, his daughter and Cooper to return the beasts back to the books where they belong.
